Hawaii 2026 // Day 5 - O'ahu

Friday, June 12, 2026 // Day 5

I woke up this morning around 4 with another migraine. After getting meds and ice I laid back in bed until 8 when the place I wanted to go for breakfast was open. It was one that Aaron had found before we came to Hawaii, and this was the first day that I wasn’t already on-the-go when it opened.

We went a little after 8, and Waffle and Berries was already packed! I snagged a table while Aaron ordered for us. I had the Aussie in Paradise waffle - sans whipped cream cream - but including vanilla ice cream, Nutella, strawberries, and bananas. Aaron had the Berries & Cream waffle with strawberries, blueberries, ice cream and whipped cream. We both got the full size, but probably should have either gotten the halves, or split a whole. It was delicious, but a lot!

When we were done we went into the shop upstairs to see if I could find the shirt I had been looking for for Aaron. Low and behold, it was there! I had been looking ALL WEEK for this dang shirt! It was my only goal for today and It was done by 9AM. I still had a migraine, so we went back to our hotel room, I got a bottle of Mountain Dew and another bag of ice and sat outside for a little while on the balcony, then laid in bed and took a nap.

I finally felt well enough to function again around noon, so we went out for a walk and to shop. I wanted to get a pair of earrings for the luau tonight that were Hawaii made. We stopped to visit my family on the beach, then meandered the shops up and down Kalakaua Avenue. We were both still full from breakfast so we decided on snack at the hotel for lunch, and I read some more on the balcony.

At 4:30PM we met up with our families and walked down to the Hilton Hawaiian for the luau! The tickets were spendy, but worth it for the experience. That being said, while I really enjoyed it, it’s a one-and-done experience for me. When we got there we were greeted with Mai Tais and led to our table. As everyone was seated, we were given brief hula dancing lessons. Then they sang a Hawaiian prayer before dismissing us by table to get food.

There was salad, lomi salmon, poi, Hawaiian macaroni salad, pineapple slaw, tomato cucumber salad, seafood noodle salad, imu baked sweet potato, kalua pig, huli huli chicken, bbq beef brisket, today’s catch fish, Hawaiian fried rice, white rice, and stir-fried vegetables with tofu. I piled my plate, but as per usual, my eyes were bigger than my stomach.

Dessert was malasadas, coconut haupia, and pineapple upside down cake. We polished off our meals and three included drinks as the performance occurred. There was hula-ing and a fire show! It was really neat to see.

The luau ended with fireworks over the lagoon. Not the most impressive show I’ve seen, but enjoyable nonetheless!

On the walk back to the Sheraton I met up with an old friend from Tennessee. Her son lives here now and we just happened to be here visiting at the same time!
